Vol. 540 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

326 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education and Science his views on whether both the enrolment numbers for the incoming as well as the preceding year should be taken into account for staffing levels; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20501/01]

The staffing of a primary school is determined by reference to the enrolment of the school on 30 September of the previous school year. The number of mainstream posts is determined by reference to a staffing schedule and is finalised on an annual basis for the following school year following discussions with the education partners.

Within the terms of the current staffing arrangements for primary schools there is provision for additional posts to be assigned to developing schools and new schools by reference to the enrolment numbers for the next school year. The criteria that currently apply for these arrangements at primary level are outlined in Circular 12/01. I will arrange to have a copy of the circular forwarded to the Deputy.
