Vol. 540 No. 3

Written Answers. - Teaching Qualifications.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

337 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the serious implications for an autistic unit (details supplied) in Finglas, Dublin 11, due to the imminent resignation of a staff member as a result of his qualifications not being recognised; if he will give urgent consideration to the recognition of this teacher; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20658/01]

My Department's records indicate that the person referred to by the Deputy has restricted recognition to teach in special schools and in special classes in ordinary national schools. This form of recognition ensures that while this person is teaching in such a capacity, he is remunerated at the salary rate applicable to a teacher with full recognition. Teachers with such recognition are entitled to teach in special classes for children with autism or autistic spectrum disorders.

My officials are not aware of any recent correspondence in relation to this matter. However, as the person has restricted recognition to teach, at full salary, in the type of class referred to by the Deputy, it would appear that the question of recognition of this teacher's qualifications has already been addressed. However, if the Deputy, or the person in question, wishes to seek clarification on the matter officials in the primary administration section of my Department in Athlone will be happy to assist with any queries.
