The funding available to my Department in respect of the built heritage in 2001 is £33.561 million. This allows my Department to carry out its remit with regard to the continued protection of national monuments and historic properties in State care, the promotion and presentation of sites with visitor facilities and at the same time to accelerate work on very necessary architectural and archaeological surveys so that planners and developers can be better informed before making project decisions. In addition, under the national development plan my Department has embarked on a major capital works programme which will see major restoration work being undertaken at over 100 of the almost 750 properties in state care in the period to 2006. The funding which is available to my Department is earmarked primarily for the built heritage in State care. The Heritage Council and the Department of the Environment and Local Government provide funding for grants schemes aimed at properties not in the care of the State.
