Vol. 541 No. 3

Written Answers. - Consultancy Contracts.

Michael Ring

Question:

149 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will provide a list of consultants who have been employed by his Department from June 1997 to date; and the fees which have been paid to each such consultant. [22543/01]

I wish to refer the Deputy to previous parliamentary questions on consultants engaged by my Department – Parliamentary Questions Nos. 377 on 26 June 2001 and 206 on 11 April 2001. The changes which have occurred since then are as set out in the following tabular statement.

To facilitate the prisons building and refurbishment programme, my Department has, on an ongoing basis, engaged consulting architects, consulting engineers and other specialists as appropriate to each particular project. The total cost for these services to my Department over the period specified is estimated at £4.5 million approximately. It would not, however, be appropriate to break these figures down to reveal the cost of each consultancy or contract because of the market sensitive nature of this information. Furthermore, in the interest of the security of prisons, it is not considered appropriate to identify consultancy firms or individual consultants in relation to prison works or prison building projects.
