Vol. 541 No. 3

Written Answers. - National Drugs Strategy.

Ivor Callely

Question:

158 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the progress made in establishing the regional drugs task forces in each health board area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22616/01]

One of the key recommendations in the national drugs strategy, 2001-08, which was launched in May 2001, is that regional drugs task forces, RDTFs, be set up in each of the health board areas to develop appropriate policies for their regions. In this context, a series of ten information seminars on the new strategy were recently held throughout the country at which representatives from my Department and the national drugs strategy team made presentations on various aspects of the strategy. The sessions were attended by representatives of the statutory, voluntary and community sectors and were also open to members of the public. One of the main issues discussed at the sessions was the setting up of the RDTFs, which will be the overall responsibility of the national drugs strategy team. It is intended that the RDTFs will be established by the end of 2001.
