Vol. 541 No. 3

Written Answers. - Pupil Enrolments.

Michael Ring

Question:

187 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of pupils enrolled in Westport vocational school, County Mayo; the number over the past five years; and the number of teachers employed in this school. [21595/01]

The pupil enrolments for Westport vocational school for the school years 1996-97 to 2000-01 inclusive are set out in the following tabular statement. These enrolment figures are derived from the annual pupil returns made by the principal of the school.

In the vocational sector, the teacher allocation is generally determined on a vocational education committee scheme basis rather than on an individual school basis. The allocation of teaching posts to individual schools from within the overall approved allocation for a particular VEC scheme is a matter for the chief executive officer with the agreement of the committee concerned. My Department has been advised that 10.277 whole-time teacher equivalents have been allocated to Westport Vocational School in the current year.
