Vol. 541 No. 3

Written Answers. - Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

121 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Health and Children the assistance or advice which can be made available to a person (details supplied) in County Kildare regarding attention deficit hyperactivity disorder; the most effective treatment in such cases; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22683/01]

The working group established by my Department in June 2000 to review child and adolescent psychiatry and to finalise a plan for its future development produced its first report on 1 March 2001. The report contained recommendations on the development of services for the management and treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorders and hyperactivity kinetic disorder – ADHD-HKD.

The working group recommended that the enhancement and expansion of the overall child and adolescent psychiatric service throughout the country, through the provision of additional child and adolescent multi-disciplinary teams and the development of closer liaison with the educational services, community services and GP services, would represent the most effective means of providing the required services for sufferers of ADHD-HKD.

The provision of services for individuals suffering from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a matter for the local health board. Accordingly, I have referred the details of the individual case identified by the Deputy to the regional chief executive officer of the Eastern Regional Health Authority and have requested him to examine the matter and reply directly to the Deputy.
