Vol. 541 No. 5

Written Answers. - Media Competition and Mergers Legislation.

Michael D. Higgins

Question:

142 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment when she expects to publish legislation to implement the recommendations of the Competition and Mergers Review Group dealing with newspaper/media mergers and cross-ownership of the media; her plans to expedite the enactment of the legislation; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [23192/01]

I received Government approval in July for the drafting of a Bill to give effect to certain recommendations of the Competition and Mergers Review Group including those relating to newspaper/media mergers and cross media ownership. Copies of the general scheme of the Bill were made available to the Oireachtas Library on 27 July, and it was also made available on the Department's website at www.entemp.ie.

The Bill is currently being drafted in the Office of the Parliamentary Counsel and I hope to be in a position to publish it later this year.
