Vol. 542 No. 1

Written Answers. - Coastal Erosion.

David Stanton

Question:

44 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the decisions he has made to make funding available to enable coastal erosion remedial works to be carried out in the east Cork region especially in Youghal and Ballycotton; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23459/01]

Responsibility for coastal protection rests with the property owner whether it be a local authority or a private individual. Under my Department's coastal protection programme for 2001, funding was made available for sea wall repairs at Youghal at a total cost of £30,000.

A preliminary three phase plan has also been completed by consulting engineers on coastal erosion at Youghal. The local authority forwarded copies of this plan to my Department. The plan was assessed by my Department's engineering division and on foot of this examination I allocated £20,000 for the preparation of tender and planning documents. I have recently received a further report from the local authority and this will be considered by the Department's engineering staff. The scope for funding construction works at this location will be determined in consultation with the local authority in the context of available funding and following consideration of the recently received report.

My Department received a proposal from Cork County Council for funding of £400,000 to repair the existing seawall at Ballycotton. This proposal will be considered in the context of future coast protection programmes and the funding available for such works.
