Vol. 542 No. 1

Written Answers. - Community Care.

Liz McManus

Question:

96 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will ensure that the development of community and rehabilitation programmes that exist in Cavan-Monaghan will occur across the country; the time frame for such development; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23561/01]

I met the people responsible for the delivery of mental health services in Cavan-Monaghan and am aware of the innovative developments that have taken place in the area in recent years. I concur with the view of the inspector of mental hospitals, as expressed in his recently-published report, that "they may well be significant for the manner in which psychiatric services will be delivered in this country in the future". Any proposals for additional funding for the development of such services in other health board areas will be considered in the context of the 2002 Estimates, having regard in particular to the priorities of each health board for the further development of the mental health services in its region.
