Vol. 542 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Jim Higgins

Question:

436 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will approve a re-routing of school transport (details supplied) for children living in the Purranes, Hollymount area of County Mayo. [24920/01]

As a rule, primary school transport routes are planned so that, as far as possible, no eligible child will have more than 1.5 miles to travel to a school bus pick-up point. Home pick-ups were never envisaged as being part of the school transport scheme as the cost involved on a countrywide level would be prohibitive.

My Department has recently received a report regarding a re-routing of the school transport service for the children from the area referred to by the Deputy. The children reside between 0.3 miles and 0.9 miles from the route of the existing bus service. This is within current guidelines and accordingly it is not proposed to re-route the service in question.
