My Department has received an application for grant aid towards the cost of a building project at Gaelscoil An Eiscir Riada. The Deputy will appreciate that there has been a massive and unprecedented increase in the funds allocated by this Government to the schools building programme at all levels.

Decisions relating to the rate of progress to construction of projects, including Gaelscoil An Eiscir Riada, will be taken in the light of the allocations to be made for school building purposes in the forthcoming Estimates.

Question:

290 Mr. Enright asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the present condition of Charleville national school, Tullamore, County Offaly; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that a new national school was promised in a letter issued from his Department on 9 December 1998; the reason for the delay in providing this new school; when he anticipates the new school will be built. [25690/01]

The property management section of the Office of Public Works has been asked to acquire a site for the school in question. However, the site acquisition has not yet been finalised.

Architectural planning for the new three class room school is at an advanced stage. Because the long-term enrolments of a school are the main factor in determining the extent and type of accommodation to be provided, my Department is undertaking an assessment of the enrolments at present.
In the meantime, my Department has authorised the school to undertake essential repairs to the temporary accommodation at the school. My Department is also prepared to consider grant-aid in respect of any necessary repairs to the permanent structure.
