Vol. 543 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

228 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science when a resource teacher will be appointed to Rathcoffey national school, Rathcoffey, Naas, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25831/01]

Resource teaching support is allocated to schools to assist children with special needs who are attending school on a fully integrated basis. The level of resource teaching support provided is based on the professionally assessed needs of the child or children involved.

My Department's inspectorate has recently investigated the special educational needs of children attending the school in question. Arising from this investigation, my Department has recently increased the level of resource teaching support provided to the school from five hours per week to 13.5 hours per week. This level of support is considered appropriate having regard to the assessed needs of the children involved.
