Vol. 543 No. 2

Written Answers. - Kyoto Protocol.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

187 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the plans the Government has to use development aid to effect Kyoto commitments. [26733/01]

The implications of the Kyoto Protocol and its mechanisms are among the issues which international donors must take into account in planning their activities under the environment related headings of their development co-operation programmes. The clean development mechanism of the Kyoto Protocol allows developed countries to gain reduction credits on their own national obligations to reduce emissions, by investing in projects that will reduce emissions in developing countries. The Government has decided, however, that we will not adjust our development co-operation priorities in order to facilitate the achievement of domestic commitments arising from the Kyoto Protocol.
