Vol. 543 No. 2

Written Answers. - Electromagnetic Radiation.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

205 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if her attention has been drawn to sensitivity among citizens to non-ionised electromagnetic radiation; and the measures and regulations which will be put in place to counteract these effects and safeguard citizens form the sources of such radiation. [26905/01]

My Department closely monitors developments in the area of non-ionising electromagnetic fields (EMF) and radiation and is aware of the public sensitivity about its existence. In my reply to Question No. 97 on 8 March 2001, I was able to give reassuring information about the current state of scientific knowledge about the risks and effects of such radiation.

The policy of my Department is to monitor all relevant research on this topic and to provide accurate up-to-date information concerning major research developments and details of the positions being taken by governments and health advisory authorities elsewhere in response to EMF developments on an even handed basis to all who seek such information.

My Department plans to produce two brochures in the near future dealing separately with EMF aspects of electricity transmission and mobile telecommunications. These brochures will be targeted at the general public, elected representatives and non-specialists working in public and environmental health.
