Written Answers. - Homeless Persons.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

480 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number registered as homeless in the greater Dublin area for the following categories: single male; single female; family with no children; one child; two children; three children; four children; five children; and more than five children, for each of the years 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25978/01]

The most recent statutory assessment of housing needs, which was undertaken in March 1999, indicated that there were 3,918 homeless persons in the greater Dublin area, as outlined in the following table:

The 1999 assessment of the number of homeless persons was based on a much broader definition of homeless persons and includes those with no accommodation, those in hostels and in health board accommodation and those staying with friends as well as those who would be staying in temporary accommodation with family or friends until suitable accommodation becomes available.
While the 1999 assessment does not give detailed information sought regarding the composition of households, the assessment does indicate that in the greater Dublin area there were 2,669 homeless households, of which 2,006 comprised of one person and 663 comprised of more than one person.
The next statutory assessment of housing needs, including the number of homeless persons, will take place in March next year. Information is not available in my Department in respect of the years 1997, 1998, 2000 and 2001.
