Vol. 543 No. 2

Written Answers. - House Completions.

Ivor Callely

Question:

500 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of housing units built in 2001; if he will provide a comparative figure for 2000; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the housing construction sector is indicating there are certain difficulties that are not encouraging for additional construction; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26294/01]

The Government has implemented a wide range of measures since coming into office to increase housing output to meet demand. New house completions last year reached just under 50,000 units, an increase of 7% over 1999 and the sixth consecutive year of record housing output. The latest available data for 2001 show that new house completions in the first nine months total 37,136, a 4.1% increase on the same period in 2000.

My Department maintains contact on an ongoing basis with the housebuilding sector, lending institutions, auctioneers and other actors in the housing market in relation to future trends and prospects in order to ensure that a maximum sustainable level of new housing output can be achieved.
