Vol. 543 No. 2

Written Answers. - Road Safety.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

528 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government his views on the Swedish example of a law requiring owners of parked vehicles to turn off their engines; and if he will introduce the same here. [26738/01]

While I do not at this stage envisage the introduction of such a legislative provision in this area, a recent booklet, "Guide to Passenger Vehicles Fuel economy and CO2 emissions", produced by SIMI in consultation with my Department, sets driving tips for improved environmental performance. These include a recommendation that drivers switch off their engines to reduce periods of engine idling when it is safe to do so.
