Vol. 543 No. 2

Written Answers. - National Parks.

Michael Ring

Question:

637 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if she will provide a name for the new national park in Ballycroy, County Mayo. [26602/01]

Following my decision in 1998 to designate 11,000 hectares of land in the Owenduff-Nephinbeg area of north west Mayo as Ireland's sixth national park, I established a working group to ensure the involvement of the local community in all decisions relating to the provision of the visitor centre at Ballycroy, including the name for the national park. When I visited Ballycroy in July 1998, I invited the local community to put forward their suggestions. The working group is made up of representatives of local community groups as well as officials of Mayo County Council, the Office of Public Works and my own Department. The working group has discussed the issue of the name for the national park at its most recent meeting on 17 October 2001 and I will announce my decision following full consideration of all the proposals put forward.

Question No. 638 answered with Question No. 622.
