Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Pádraic McCormack

Question:

656 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of gardaí assigned to Galway city; the number assigned in Galway city in 1990, 1995 and 1998; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26054/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities, who are responsible for the detailed allocation of resources to individual areas, that the personnel strength – all ranks – of Galway Garda station as at 31 December 1990, 1995 and 1998 and currently is as follows:

Year

Strength

1990*

140

1995

126

1998

144

1/10/01

164

*The figure for 1990 refers to the personnel strength prior to the establishment of Salthill district and is therefore not comparable to the later figures.
The above figures represent an increase of 38, or 30%, in the personnel allocated to Galway Garda station since 31 December 1995.
