Vol. 543 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Operations.

Denis Naughten

Question:

667 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans he has to assign additional functions to PSV inspectors, including road accident investigation and cause; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26156/01]

Public service vehicle inspectors are members of the Garda Síochána. Consequently, the assignment of additional duties to public service vehicle inspectors is a Garda operational matter and, therefore, comes within the remit of the Garda Commissioner.

I am informed by Garda authorities that the Garda Commissioner has set up a working group chaired by the chief superintendent, Garda national traffic bureau, to examine the role of PSV inspectors and to establish how this could be more effective in the area of road safety. It is expected that the working group will report before the end of this year. Currently, PSV inspectors are actively involved in road traffic accident investigation.
