Vol. 543 No. 2

Written Answers. - Closed Circuit Television Systems.

Michael Bell

Question:

679 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the reason the borough of Drogheda has been relegated from sixth position to thirtieth position in the list of locations for the installation of closed circuit television; if his attention has been drawn to the serious crime problems at night in the main town centre areas and the serious damage to the properties of traders; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26280/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that an application for a Garda CCTV system in Drogheda was received last week by the advisory committee that was established by the commissioner to evaluate applications for Garda CCTV systems. The application from Drogheda will now be considered by the committee – together with applications from other cities and towns throughout the country. Co-funding is a feature of Garda CCTV systems and this is usually addressed when it has been decided to install a Garda CCTV system in an area.

I am also informed by the Garda authorities that they are aware of several recent incidents of public disorder at night in Drogheda town and that investigations are on-going in relation to these incidents.
