Vol. 543 No. 2

Written Answers. - Institutional Abuse.

Michael Creed

Question:

786 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has received the report of the compensation advisory committee regarding victims of institutional abuse; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26336/01]

Róisín Shortall

Question:

870 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science when he expects to receive the recommendations of the compensation advisory committee in respect of the award scheme for survivors of institutional abuse; the plans he has to publish this report prior to consideration of the Residential Institutions Redress Bill, 2001; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27009/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 786 and 870 together.

I appointed the committee of experts, which will advise in relation to compensation amounts for abuse in childhood, on 30 August. I expect that the committee will report to me next month and I will arrange for the publication of their report as soon as practicable thereafter. I do not consider that the work of the committee and the publication of their report should delay consideration of the Residential Institutions Redress Bill. To do so would unreasonably delay the setting up of the redress scheme. This House will, in accordance with provisions now contained in the Bill, have an opportunity to debate the report and any regulations made arising from it.
