Vol. 543 No. 2

Written Answers. - Fisheries Protection.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

166 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the legal basis on which the South-Western Regional Fisheries Board created a several fishery on the River Laune, County Kerry; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26229/01]

The South-Western Regional Fisheries Board advises that it has not created a new several, that is, privately owned, fishery on the Laune nor would it be empowered to do so. The board, in support of the work of the Laune-Lein Fisheries Catchment Management Group, has leased the fishing rights from the owners, KRD, of the private fishery in question. The South-Western Regional Fisheries Board informs me that, in the exercise of these rights and in the interests of conserving salmon, it is not permitting draft netting and angling on the fishery.
