Vol. 543 No. 3

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 31 dealing with two different topics. I propose to deal with these topics separately and I will call on the Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office.

In regard to the first topic I have received notice from Deputy Breeda Moynihan-Cronin. I call on the Deputy to state the matter.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following urgent matter: the serious crisis in the tourism industry which faces a loss of £230 million in the coming year, a fall of 550,000 in visitor numbers, the potential loss of 14,000 jobs and the need for urgent Government action to avert another disastrous year for the tourism industry.

Having given the matter full consideration, I do not consider it to be contemplated by Standing Order 31 and therefore I cannot grant leave to move the motion.

In regard to the second topic I have received notices from Deputies Joe Higgins and Sargent. I call on Deputy Higgins to state the matter.

(Dublin West): Go raibh maith agat, Ceann Comhairle, agus faoi Riail 31 iarraim an Dáil a chur ar athló chun diospóireacht a dhéanamh ar ábhar tabhachtach: the Government's failure to join calls for a halt to the bombing of Afghanistan by the US and Britain to allow a massive organisation of humanitarian aid before winter sets in to avert the threatened catastrophe of hundreds of thousands of innocent men, women and children dying of starvation and cold, and the need to compel the Government to change its policy of supporting the bombing.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following urgent matter: the need for the Government's role in the escalating war in Afghanistan to be reassessed in the interest of stopping further suffering, given the merciless use of cluster bombs and carpet bombing, and the appalling and growing humanitarian crisis in that country.

Having given the matter full consideration I do not consider it to be contemplated by Standing Order 31 and therefore I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
