Vol. 543 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

163 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the position regarding the presence of a Garda car at mornings, afternoons, evenings and at weekends at a Border Garda station (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27316/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities, who are responsible for the detailed allocation of personnel and resources to individual areas, that there are three vehicles currently assigned to Lifford Garda station – one ford transit, one patrol car and one detective branch vehicle. I am also informed that Lifford Garda station operates on a 24 hour basis and in the event of a personnel shortage for whatever reason the station has a local arrangement with Castlefin.

I am further informed that a mobile patrol usually operates out of Lifford Garda station, but in the event of there being insufficient personnel from either Lifford or Castlefin to man this vehicle cover is provided by a mobile unit from Carrigans. Both Castlefin and Carrigans also operate on a 24 hour basis and are in close proximity to Lifford. The Garda authorities consider that the mobile patrols at Lifford are adequate to meet current requirements.
