Tom Hayes

Question:

43 Mr. T. Hayes asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the person responsible for the design, construction and placement of the fish counter at Kilsheelin, County Tipperary; the cost of construction and installation; if the counter is working on site; and if not, the reason therefor. [27396/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 42 and 43 together.

The fish counter in question was installed in mid-2000 by AZTEC consultants on behalf of the Marine Institute at a cost of £55,000. During the remainder of 2000 the company undertook extensive trials of the counter that included gathering test data and generally assessing the suitability of the site chosen. This work cost in the region of £20,000. I have been informed that because of unusually high water levels encountered last spring on the River Suir the equipment was removed to avoid damage.

I understand that additional work is still necessary on the counter to ensure the dependability of fish counts. I have therefore requested the Marine Institute and the Southern Regional Fisheries Board to work together to ensure that the counter is made fully operational as quickly as possible.
