Vol. 543 No. 4

Written Answers. - Transport Strategy.

Richard Bruton

Question:

45 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the capital expenditure projections up to 2015 under the Dublin Transport Office's proposals for an integrated transport system for Dublin; and the amount of this expenditure that will occur within the present national development plan. [27388/01]

The cost of the integrated transport strategy which forms the Dublin Transportation Office's, A Platform for Change Strategy 2000-2016, published in September 2000, has been estimated at IR£14.1 billion or 17.9 billion. This strategy is currently being updated and a final report, including updated costings, is expected to be published shortly.

The elements of the strategy which fall within my Department's responsibility include the Metro, Luas, DART-suburban rail and an expanded bus network.
The DTO's strategy envisages an expanded programme of public transport for the period 2000-2006. Of particular significance is the proposed Metro which was not incorporated in the NDP which preceded the DTO strategy.
The funding of the various projects in the strategy will be sourced from Exchequer and EU funding, borrowings and own resources and from PPPs. As soon as the final strategy is published, my Department will be examining the funding arrangements for the projects over the period of the national development plan to 2006.
