Vol. 543 No. 4

Written Answers. - Health Services.

Bernard Allen

Question:

90 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will make a statement on recent reported comments by a person (details supplied) that a model for population and health care based purely on corporate economics will provide profits for some but will fail to protect the health of the population; and his views on whether public health services are gradually being privatised. [27357/01]

The policy issues around the choice of funding method for the health services have been reviewed in the course of preparing the new health strategy. The Government's position in regard to future funding arrangements will be made clear in the strategy. The Government intends to publish the strategy in the coming weeks and I do not feel it would be useful to offer further comment in advance of that.

Question:

91 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children his plans to combine the efforts of the voluntary and statutory sectors within the health services with a view to meeting the future challenges and targets in the provision of the health services in an efficient manner. [27358/01]

The voluntary and statutory sectors play a key role in delivering health and personal social services in Ireland. The interface between the two sectors was the subject of specific analysis by a working group during the preparation of the health strategy. The group's thinking will be reflected in the strategy when it is published shortly.
