The administration of the system for the registration of marriages is a matter for An t-Árd Chláraitheoir, Registrar General for Births, Deaths and Marriages, and registrars who operate under his general direction.
Registrars of marriage are appointed under the Marriages (Ireland) Act, 1844, and the Registration of Marriages (Ireland) Act, 1863. Registrars appointed under the 1863 Act register marriages solemnised according to the rites and ceremonies of the Roman Catholic Church. The duties of registrars appointed under the Marriages Ireland Act, 1844, include the taking of notice for marriage, the issue of licences or certificates for marriage and the solemnisation of marriages in their offices. There are 29 such registrars offices and their locations are set out as following.
I am advised that other information requested by the Deputy is not readily available. I have asked An t-Árd Chláraitheoir to compile the information requested and furnish it to the Deputy.
