Vol. 543 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Operations.

Ivor Callely

Question:

425 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his views on the recommendations of the review group of all fatal and serious accidents which took place in the Dublin metropolitan region in 1999; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26564/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the review referred to by the Deputy was an internal Garda review of its traffic operations for Garda management and, as such, its results would not be communicated to my Department. This review was part of the ongoing intelligence work of the Garda Síochána in the traffic enforcement area, as part of which they would monitor fatal and serious injury collisions at district, divisional and regional levels.

It is a function of Garda management to ensure that intelligence in this area of law enforcement, as with other areas, is gathered, collated and acted upon appropriately and I am satisfied that the necessary practice and procedures are in place for this purpose. It would not be appropriate for me to comment on internal Garda operational matters.
