Vol. 543 No. 5

Written Answers. - Mountain Bike Patrols.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

93 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will report on the success or otherwise to date, of the Garda mountain bike patrols established in various areas; and his plans to establish future patrols of this nature. [27694/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities, who are responsible for the detailed allocation of personnel and resources to individual areas, that mountain bicycle units were established on a pilot basis, in Raheny and Tallaght in Dublin, on 5 June, 2001.

I am further informed that a decision by the Garda authorities on the extension of Garda bicycle patrols will not be made until a thorough review of the effectiveness of the current pilot projects is completed early in 2002.
