Written Answers. - Garda Investigations.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

106 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the position regarding the Garda investigation into the Omagh bombing; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27656/01]

The investigation by the Garda Síochána into the Omagh bombing is continuing. The Deputy will be aware from previous parliamentary questions on this matter that one person has been charged in connection with the bombing. The trial of this person is ongoing before the Special Criminal Court.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

107 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has received the report commissioned by the Garda Commissioner into the death of a person (details supplied); if it is intended to publish the report; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27657/01]

I have been informed by Garda authorities that the investigation into this case is still under way and, when it has been completed, a file will be submitted to the DPP for his directions. As the Deputy will appreciate, it would be inappropriate for me to comment any further on the matter, at risk of prejudicing the Garda investigation.

In relation to the report referred to by the Deputy, in the light of the tragic outcome of this case the Garda commissioner appointed a senior officer to examine and investigate all aspects of the circumstances surrounding this incident. It would not be appropriate for me to make any further comment on the detail of this matter pending completion of that investigation.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

108 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the status of the inquiry established following discussions between the Minister and Opposition spokespersons relating to events in County Donegal; if these inquiries have been finalised; if the findings will be published; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27678/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that on 29 June 2000 the commissioner directed that a fact finding investigation be carried out concerning information passed to me by Deputies Higgins and Howlin on 27 June, 2001.

I am further informed that, to date, extensive inquiries have been conducted in the Donegal division and elsewhere, and that a large number of people have been interviewed. I am advised by the Garda authorities that they have had to seek legal advice in relation to some matters and, once this advice is to hand, every effort will be made to complete the inquiries expeditiously.
