Vol. 543 No. 5

Written Answers. - Arms Confiscation.

Billy Timmins

Question:

136 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if the small arms confiscated from individuals under a temporary custody order in August 1972 will be returned; the location of these weapons; the number of weapons involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27727/01]

Records compiled in 1972 indicate that 849 pistols and 700 revolvers were surrendered to the Garda Síochána in accordance with the provisions of the Firearms (Temporary Custody) Order, 1972. Some of the firearms are stored in Garda Headquarters while the remainder are stored in army barracks in Dublin and throughout the country. My Department is currently reviewing the present firearms licensing policy in conjunction with the Garda authorities. Pending the outcome of the review, it would be premature for me to comment further.
