Vol. 544 No. 2

Written Answers. - Road Safety.

Tom Hayes

Question:

107 Mr. T. Hayes asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will sanction flashing lights for all national schools; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28330/01]

I am aware that the National Roads Authority has completed a special programme for the installation of standard safety facilities at some 300 schools located on the national road network.

A new sub-programme of low cost remedial measures for non-national roads was introduced in 2000 and continued in 2001. My Department has drawn the attention of road authorities in the context of this sub-programme, as well as in the context of the use of discretionary grants, to the desirability of providing flashing lights in the vicinity of schools on significantly trafficked non-national roads.

It is now a matter for local road authorities to consider the use of this facility in appropriate cases.
