Question:

109 Mr. Fleming asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the position whereby insurance companies provide temporary cover on a motor vehicle at the request of the policy holder; if the company is obliged to issue a windscreen disc in respect of each temporary policy. [28361/01]

I propose to answer Questions Nos. 108 and 109 together.

Under the Road Traffic (Insurance Disc) Regulations, 1984, where a certificate of insurance is issued to a person, the vehicle insurer is also required to issue one insurance disc for each vehicle to which the certificate relates. These regulations also require the insurance disc to be displayed on the windscreen of the vehicle. However, this latter requirement in relation to the display of the disc only applies ten days after the date of authentication of the certificate of insurance.

These provisions are in place to support the enforcement of the compulsory insurance requirements for motor vehicles.
