213 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the situation regarding noise and negative effects of noise pollution from alarms; if action is open to persons; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29134/01]

I refer to the reply to Question No. 690 of 3 October 2001 regarding noise from alarms and the action open to persons in this regard.

I refer also to the reply to Question No. 12 of 5 April 2001 regarding the controls on noise under planning and environmental law. The forthcoming EU directive on the assessment and management of environmental noise, which will provide a basis for future development of national noise policy, remains subject to agreement between the European Council of Environment Ministers and the European Parliament.
