Vol. 544 No. 4

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 31 dealing with two different topics. I propose to deal with these topics separately and I will call on Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office.

In regard to the first topic I have received notices from Deputies McGrath and Penrose. I call on Deputy McGrath to state the matter.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following urgent matter: the loss of 119 jobs at Foxtec Ireland Limited, Mullingar, County Westmeath, and the need for the Government to establish a task force to find an alternative industry for this factory.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following urgent matter: the serious implications for employment in Westmeath of the loss of 119 jobs at Foxtec Ireland Limited, Mullingar, and the need for the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment to request the job creation agencies to make particular efforts to find replacement employment for these and other jobs lost in the area in recent months. In view of the importance of the matter I hope you will agree to this request.

Having given the matter full consideration, I do not consider it to be contemplated by Standing Order 31 and therefore I cannot grant leave to move the motion.

In regard to the second topic I have received notice from Deputy Sargent and I call on the Deputy to state the matter.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following urgent matter: the fact that alcohol consumption per capita has increased by over 41% over the past decade while it has fallen in most of the EU, and the need for the Government to embark on a serious campaign to reduce alcohol consumption, which costs the nation £2 billion a year in poor health and lost work.

Having given the matter full consideration, I do not consider it to be contemplated by Standing Order 31 and therefore I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
