Vol. 544 No. 4

Written Answers. - Salmon Fishing.

Michael D. Higgins

Question:

82 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he has received the further advice he sought from the National Salmon Commission to protect vulnerable spring salmon stock; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28930/01]

In April 2001 the National Salmon Commission made a number of recommendations to me in relation to the conservation of spring salmon. I have already implemented one of these recommendations by making an order prohibiting the sale of rod caught salmon and sea trout with effect from 1 August 2001.

I have stated that I accept the commission's recommendation for a bag limit of one fish per angler per day prior to 1 June. As a further contribution to conservation, I invited the commission to give me a recommendation for bag limits for the totality of the 2002 angling season, striking a balance between essential conservation and reasonable sport. In relation to the proposed prohibition on the use of prawn and shrimp as bait, I asked the commission to consult the regional fisheries boards on the areas and times of application of such a measure. The commission has not yet made additional recommendations to me regarding these two matters. I look forward to receiving those recommendations as soon as possible and any other recommendations to protect spring salmon which the commission deems necessary.
The commission has, however, reaffirmed its recommendation for a bag limit from 1 January to 31 May and I propose to make the necessary by-law to provide for this.
