Vol. 544 No. 4

Written Answers. - EU Directives.

Seán Ryan

Question:

89 Mr. S. Ryan asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he has received a request from the European Commission to require and prepare formal anti-pollution programmes for shellfish in accordance with the shellfish water quality directive; the action he will take on foot of the request; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28923/01]

My Department has not to date received requests from the European Commission with regard to the preparation of anti-pollution programmes under the shellfish water quality directive. The Department has initiated discussions with the Department of the Environment and Local Government on the requirements of the Quality of Shellfish Waters (Amendment) Regulations, 2001. S.I. No. 459 of 2001. We will also be consulting the aquaculture industry. These discussions will inform decisions on future strategies and action plans in line with the shellfish water quality directive.
