Vol. 545 No. 1

Written Answers. - Hospital Services.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

223 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Health and Children the position regarding the siting of the regional specialist breast cancer treatment centre at the General Hospital, Portlaoise, County Laois; when the appropriate appointments will be made to the centre; and when the centre will open. [29907/01]

I have provided a sum of £500,000 this year to the Midland Health Board for the development of symptomatic breast disease services in line with the recommendations of the report of the sub-group on the development of services for symptomatic breast disease. The board has formulated detailed proposals in relation to the development of services in its functional area, including services at Portlaoise General Hospital. These proposals are the subject of ongoing consultations between the board and my Department. I would like to assure the Deputy that my Department will continue to work with the board to ensure a comprehensive and coherent approach to the development of services for symptomatic breast disease in the region.
