Vol. 545 No. 1

Written Answers. - Summer Jobs Scheme.

Michael Ring

Question:

272 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the reason students participating in the students summer job scheme have not got the additional £1 promised to them; and when these moneys will be paid. [29782/01]

This year the students summer jobs scheme ran from 1 June until 30 September. The scheme is targeted at students from low income families who are participating in third level courses and who under existing legislation cannot apply for unemployment assistance during the summer months.

This year, in order to focus resources where the need is greatest, I decided to pay an extra £1, 1.27, per hour to those students who come from households fully dependent on social welfare payments, providing for a maximum payment of £800, 1,015.79, for 200 hours work in such cases. It is estimated that over 900 students will benefit from this additional payment.

All applications are currently being examined with a view to identifying those students who will qualify for this additional sum and payments are being processed. It is hoped to have all payments issued by mid-December to those students who qualify.
