300 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the full addresses and the locations where refugees and asylum seekers are accommodated; the number in each location; and the new locations planned in this regard. [29902/01]

The Reception and Integration Agency – RIA – is responsible, inter alia, for meeting the accommodation needs of asylum seekers while their applications for refugee status are being processed. Refugees have access on the same basis as Irish citizens to the general housing stock.

The information sought by the Deputy in respect of the centres currently in use by the RIA to accommodate asylum seekers is set out as follows:

The RIA has recently entered into a short-term contract with the owners of Glenvera Hotel, Wellington Road, Cork city, for the provision of full board accommodation and ancillary services to asylum seekers from 10 December 2001. It is envisaged that up to 100 asylum seekers, mainly couples, will be accommodated when the hotel is fully operational. In bringing it on stream, the agency will adopt a sensitive approach to making placements and numbers will be built up on a phased basis.

In accordance with Government policy, the RIA is assessing the potential of accommodation offers in all regions throughout the State on an ongoing basis. In line with normal practice I do not propose to release details of these properties until such time as the arrangements in relation to them have been agreed and all relevant formalities concluded.
