Vol. 545 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Gerry Reynolds

Question:

306 Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason persons (details supplied) in County Leitrim have not been approved for free school transport. [29521/01]

Post-primary pupils who reside three miles from the post-primary centre of the catchment area in which they reside are eligible for transport under the school transport scheme to that centre.

The post-primary pupil concerned, resides 2.4 miles from his appropriate post-primary centre and is therefore ineligible for school transport on distance grounds. In the circumstances, the most that my Department can offer him is concessionary fare-paying transport on the service in question. There is no provision under the terms of the school transport scheme whereby the fare can be waived for ineligible pupils.

Primary pupils who reside two miles or over and attend their nearest national school are eligible for free transport. The family should apply to their local Bus Éireann office for a free ticket in respect of the primary pupil.
