Question:

311 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of students registered for science courses in each college of technology for each year from 1996 to 2000, inclusive; the number of students who sat the end of year examination for each year; the number of students who passed the examinations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29571/01]

The information sought by the Deputy in respect of the number of students enrolled on science courses in each institute of technology is available only in respect of the academic years 1999-2000 and 2000-01. For previous years 1997-98 and 1998-99 only the combined figures for science and computing are available. Similar data for earlier years are not available. The available data are as follows:

312 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of first year students registered for science courses in each of the colleges of technology in the current academic year; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29572/01]

The information sought by the Deputy in respect of the number of students registered for science courses in each of the institutes of technology in the current academic year is not yet available in my Department.

These data are collected through a set of annual statistical returns compiled by the Institutes as of 31 October each year. The compilation of the data in my Department is completed on receipt of returns from all Institutes. I will forward the information requested to the Deputy when it is available.
