Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Michael Creed

Question:

347 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of temporary or part-time teachers employed in schools at primary and post primary level; and the implications for the teachers and his Department of the passing of the Protection of Employees (Part-Time) Work) Bill, 2000. [29846/01]

According to my Department's records, there were 1,406 temporary whole-time teachers and 1,657 eligible part-time teachers employed in secondary and community-comprehensive schools in the 2000-01 school year. Details of the numbers of such teachers employed by vocational education committees are being compiled and will be forwarded to the Deputy in due course. There were 1,879 temporary teachers employed in primary schools in the 2000/2001 school year. The position of temporary and part-time teachers will be reviewed when the legislation referred to by the Deputy is enacted.
