Vol. 545 No. 4

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Training.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

168 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Defence if consideration has been given to the provision of a military academy here; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30881/01]

A military college was established at the Curragh in 1930 in accordance with Defence Force Regulations CS 3. The military college currently includes the following schools: the cadet school for officer induction training and potential officer training and the infantry school for officers, providing a junior command and staff course. In addition, this school has a number of training wings: the non-commissioned officer wing to conduct senior NCO courses – sergeant – and standard NCO courses for corporals and the infantry weapons wing for the training of weapons instructors. There is also the command and staff school for officers of senior rank and UNTSI. In 1993, the then Minister inaugurated a new constituent school, the United Nations Training School Ireland, for the purpose of formulating and disseminating peacekeeping doctrine throughout the Defence Forces and to train officers and NCOs for specific peacekeeping missions.

This structure has been reviewed by military boards established by successive chiefs of staff and by Price Waterhouse in 1994-95. Current arrangements are considered satisfactory and compatible with international military standards in training and military education. Instructors of the various schools attend courses overseas in order to stay abreast of current doctrine and procedures.

The military college also includes various support elements to assist the schools. These include an audio visual unit, library and language laboratory and administrative staff for logistical support. The military college is recognised as a designated institution by the Higher Education Training Awards Committee. The cadet course and specific NCO courses have been awarded diploma status by HETAC.
