Vol. 545 No. 4

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

I have received related notices under Standing Order No. 31 from Deputies Jim Higgins and Sargent. I propose to call on them in the order in which their notices were submitted to my office.

(Mayo): I seek the adjournment of Dáil Éireann under Standing Order No. 31 to debate the following matter requiring urgent consideration, namely yesterday's refusal by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea to stop the opening on 20 December of the MOX reprocessing plant at Sellafield, the major threat that the plant poses to this country and the steps the Government now proposes to take to ensure that the plant is not allowed to be commissioned.

I request the adjournment of Dáil Éireann under Standing Order No. 31 to address the grave threats posed to this country by the Sellafield nuclear plant and, in particular, the start-up of the MOX reprocessing plant following the failure of the Government's court case to halt its commissioning, and to look forward towards actions that may be taken by the Government to prevent the plant from opening.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be contemplated under Standing Order No. 31.
