Vol. 545 No. 4

Written Answers. - Inland Waterways.

Dick Spring

Question:

194 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Finance if the Tralee canal basin will be supplied with lock gates of a traditional style, made of wood, which would be more in keeping with the overall nature of the development. [30787/01]

The existing lock gates have been examined and would require substantial refurbishment to make them suitable for re-use. Consideration is being given to replacing them with steel gates which are now widely used in canal restoration. Every effort would of course be made to keep the appearance of the locks as traditional as possible if, as is likely, it is decided to replace the gates.
