Vol. 545 No. 4

Written Answers. - Tax Free Betting.

Deirdre Clune

Question:

213 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the fact that moves by the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer reducing betting tax from 9% to zero for betting over the Internet has meant that large bookmakers here have moved their telephone and Internet servers to the UK which could result in large job losses; his plans to redress this situation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30711/01]

As is customary it is not my intention to comment on tax matters in advance of the budget. The UK Government has reduced betting tax from 6.75% to zero, while replacing it with a new gross profits tax applying to bookmakers.
